NewBay Media acquires Intent Media Limited

NEW YORK, NY (December 5, 2012) — NewBay Media LLC (“NewBay”) announced today that it has acquired Intent Media Limited (“Intent”).

Intent, based in the U.K., produces business publications, websites and events within the entertainment, technology and leisure markets. Its brands include Pro Sound News Europe, TVB Europe, Installation, MCV, and ToyNews among many others.

“Strategically, our plan has always included international expansion, and I am pleased that we were able to do this with a company that so perfectly complements our own portfolio and mission,” states Steve Palm, President and CEO, NewBay. “The addition of Intent immediately enhances our ability to serve the Broadcast, Pro Audio and AV markets. Further, Intent’s terrific team and operating platform open up new opportunities for global expansion of our powerful U.S. brands, as well as development of Intent’s market-leading Gaming, Music and Computer/Mobile Retailing brands into the U.S.”

Intent will operate in parallel to NewBay’s existing business. Stuart Dinsey, Intent’s Founder and Managing Director, will continue his role under the new ownership and will help manage NewBay’s European efforts, operating from Intent’s offices in Hertfordshire and London.

“Intent has constantly expanded, becoming one of Europe’s biggest specialists in business media for entertainment markets,” says Dinsey. “Our entrepreneurial spirit and on-going ambitions fit perfectly with NewBay. Together, we look forward to exploring further growth opportunities.”

The transaction between NewBay, which was formed in 2006 by the sale of United Business Media’s CMP Entertainment Media division, and Intent, which purchased several brands from United Business Media last year, returns several sister publications back under one roof.

These include Pro Sound News and Pro Sound News Europe, Systems Contractor News and Installation, and TV Technology (which now incorporates TV Broadcast) and TVB Europe. The combined portfolio will offer readers, advertisers and partners unparalleled depth, breadth and reach into these vibrant, dynamic and international markets.

“I have been impressed with every aspect of Intent’s business — I am excited to include these dynamic brands and talented team as part of the NewBay family,” adds Palm. “Together with Intent, our ability to serve our readers, advertisers and partners is immediately expanded and enhanced.”

This marks the sixth major acquisition of brands by NewBay in as many years, adding select assets from United Business Media’s CMP Entertainment Media division in September 2006, from IMAS in July 2007, from Reed Business Information-US in December 2009, from Penton in February 2011, and from Future PLC in January 2012. All of the previously acquired titles continue to thrive as part of the NewBay Media portfolio.

The Jordan, Edmiston Group, Inc. (JEGI), a leading independent investment bank, represented Intent in this transaction and acted as its exclusive financial advisor.

Mobile Entertainment appoints new editor

Mobile Entertainment has appointed Daniel Gumble as its new editor, as the tech website continues in its bid to accelerate into new market sectors.

Daniel will work alongside ME’s publisher, Katy Phillips, associate editor Tim Green, and staff writer Zen Terrelonge on the daily site, as well as conferences and networking events.

As editor, he will help to shape the future direction of ME as it explores the increasing engagement of brands with mobile content.

“Daniel is an experienced entertainment tech journalist who has enjoyed tremendous success during his time leading Audio Pro International. We are thrilled that he has moved across to Mobile Entertainment and look forward to him getting out there to meet the industry,” said ME publisher Katy Phillips.

The appointment follows Mike Shaw’s departure, whose time as caretaker editor of ME was short but impactful, generating some of our best traffic ever and ensuring that the gap between Tim Green’s switch to associate editor and Dan’s arrival was a smooth one.

He will still be involved with Mobile Entertainment and is available for other freelance work. Mike can be found tweeting at @mikeshaw101 or email him at mike@mpshaw.co.uk.

Daniel can be contacted on daniel.gumble@intentmedia.co.uk and followed on Twitter at @DanGumble.

MI Pro strengthens editorial team

A Canadian national, Mackay is a journalism graduate and has also spent time working in MI retail at Long and McQuade, one of Canada’s largest musical instrument specialists. A multi-instrumentalist, he has also toured extensively on the live circuit in North America.

Mackay replaces Adam Savage who has moved up to become editor of Audio Pro International, MI Pro‘s online sister publication.

“Jory joins MI Pro at a very exciting time,” said managing editor, Ronnie Dungan, “as we push ahead with a number of new projects and ideas that will extend and strengthen what is already a very strong brand. He is an excellent journalist and his experience at retail and product knowledge will be a very valuable asset for us.”

New editor for Audio Pro International

Savage has moved across from API sister title MI Pro – the UK trade magazine for the musical instrument market – where he spent more than two years and contributed to Audio Pro International on a regular basis.

He replaces Daniel Gumble, who has been appointed as the new editor of Mobile Entertainment another Intent Media title.

“This is a great move for Adam and for Audio Pro International. The site made great progress under Daniel’s stewardship and we will of course maintain that upward trajectory and look to kick on with some exciting new projects in the near future,” Dungan commented.

To contact the new API editor, call 01992 535646 or email adam.savage@intentmedia.co.uk.

Top 50 Mobile Innovators 2012 celebrated

Last year, ME set out on a mission to round up the rising stars of the UK mobile space, and thus our ME Top 50 Mobile Innovators event was born.

Given the success of the event and how pleased the various app makers, ad networks, games developers, marketers and so on were to find themselves awarded a position, we decided to do it all over again this year.

The 2012 sequel took place last night at the 24 London club where guests arrived with plus ones, and in some cases plus eights, to really make their most of their victory.

AdModa, Fetch and Ribot were among returning winners, while newcomers included Bemoko, Blippar, and Zeebox – see the full list here.

Twilio was the Gold Partner for the evening, with SNR Denton and BDO acting as Silver Partners, while Frog Capital and IMR also showed their support.

Check out the photo gallery below (tag on Facebook), and click here for the digital who’s who guide.

For more information about the ME Top 50 Innovators, contact Katy.Phillips@intentmedia.co.uk or call her on +44 (0)1992 535 646.
