MCV Awards 2013: UK’s best recognised at gala event

Sixteen different companies claimed the trade’s most coveted awards, voted for by a judging panel of peers and senior execs.

CentreSoft won the highest honour, the Grand Prix, a worthy win recognising 30 years of business supporting retailers and key publishing partners. It also was named the year’s best High Street Distributor.

GAME reclaimed its Specialist Retailer crown after a tumultuous 2012. CEO Martyn Gibbs, who has led the firm out trouble post-administration, was also given the Special Recognition prize honouring 25 years in retail.

Ubisoft won the most, taking Digital Distribution Team, Export Sales Team and Marketing Team while Assassin’s Creed III won Game Campaign and Digital Campaign.

Activision won two, taking Trade Marketing Team and Third Party Games Hardware for Skylanders Giants.

EA also won two key trade awards – UK Sales Team, and the coveted Game Publisher of the Year prize.

But in total there were sixteen different winners across the 25 prizes, reflecting a diverse UK games business with players of all sizes.

Other happy recipients included Scottish indie retail chain Game Centre, Steam (for Digital Distributor), and Bethesda’s Dishonored (New Game Brand winner).

The full list of winners can be found below.

The MCV Awards are organised by the team behind MCV and have been running for 11 years.

This year’s show will be held on Wednesday June 26th at Whittlebury Hall, Northamptonshire. The new venue means increased exhibition space for partners with separate, connected, rooms ranging from 8-23 square metres in size, offering greater promotional possiblities.

New awards launch applauds pro audio industry

The Pro Sound Awards is jointly-backed by leading pro audio business titles Audio Pro International, PSNEurope, Installation, and Audio Media, and supported by MI Pro and Music Week.

Sennheiser and Digico have already demonstrated support for the Awards by signing up as headline sponsors.

The Pro Sound Awards will be held on 19th September at the world-famous Ministry of Sound night club in London, with some 16 different accolades handed out during the evening. There will also be a complimentary drinks reception and post-awards party.

Sennheiser business development specialist, Alan March, remarked: “At Sennheiser we are constantly ‘In Pursuit Of Perfect Sound’, so it’s great to be associated with an event that honours great audio. We’re confident that the Pro Sound Awards will become an integral part of the audio industry’s calendar.”

David Webster, marketing director at Digico, added: “Digico has a reputation for being ahead of the game, so we’re delighted that, along with our friends at Sennheiser UK, we are the first headline sponsors of the Pro Sound Awards.”

“There are plenty of product awards out there but few that celebrate the individual excellence of the people working in the many and varied areas of pro audio. These awards will reflect the hard work, skill and imagination of those people,” said Ronnie Dungan, managing editor of Audio Pro International.

PSNEurope editor, Dave Robinson, added: “We want the Pro Sound Awards to become a must-attend annual event – an evening that salutes an intensity of effort but accompanies it with the informality of a great night out. Come and join us: we’re going to have fun, while the great and the good of pro audio will leave the Ministry of Sound triumphant.”

ToyNews website traffic soars at Toy Fair

ToyNews drew tens of thousands of visitors to its website during Toy Fair 2013, thanks to its unmatched coverage of the big London event this week.

With 44 stories being posted by the ToyNew teams during the three-day event (plus more before and after the show), the site generated 65,156 page views from Friday January 18th to Friday January 25th.

ToyNews publisher Lisa Carter said: “This year’s Toy Fair was a fantastic event, befitting the 60th anniversary of the show in the UK. And we’re delighted that our unparalleled coverage of the key announcements from the exhibitors has created a major spike in our online traffic figures.

“A huge well done to the ToyNews editorial team. This was achieved whilst Samantha and the team were also traipsing the show floor meeting up with all our friends and toy industry colleagues.”

Last year ToyNews set record website traffic figures.

MCV Awards 2013 finalists unveiled

You can see the full list of nominees for the MCV Awards 2013 below.

Ubisoft leads the way with 12 nominations, followed by ten for EA, nine for Warner and eight a piece for Activision and Xbox.

But the heavyweights are competing head-to-head with nimbler firms such as Sega and Bethesda (eight nominations each), 2K (seven) and NCsoft (four).

Game Retail also scores four nominations.

We’re also today announcing some category updates to reflect the activity of games publishers large and small over the last 12 months.

Digital Campaign champions broader online efforts versus targeted events or stunts in Audience Engagement.

A new Specialist Game Publisher award honours smaller outfits that serve a niche better than the mainstream gang.

Meanwhile, splitting Independent Retail into online and High Street reflects the sector’s variety.

Next, our panel of judges will soon be invited to vote for the finalists. We’ll again be asking 100 journalists to pick a PR Team winner.

Winners will be named on the night of Thursday, April 18th at the Greg Davies-hosted ceremony at the London Lancaster Hotel.

To attend, contact Kathryn.Humphrey@intentmedia.co.uk or call her on 01992 535 646.

Event partners for the 2013 MCV Awards include Wii U, IGN, ShopTo, Incomm, Intergi, Green Man Gaming, and OPM. Contact Jennie.Lane@intentmedia.co.uk for information on other sponsorship opportunities.

NewBay Media acquires Intent Media Limited

NEW YORK, NY (December 5, 2012) — NewBay Media LLC (“NewBay”) announced today that it has acquired Intent Media Limited (“Intent”).

Intent, based in the U.K., produces business publications, websites and events within the entertainment, technology and leisure markets. Its brands include Pro Sound News Europe, TVB Europe, Installation, MCV, and ToyNews among many others.

“Strategically, our plan has always included international expansion, and I am pleased that we were able to do this with a company that so perfectly complements our own portfolio and mission,” states Steve Palm, President and CEO, NewBay. “The addition of Intent immediately enhances our ability to serve the Broadcast, Pro Audio and AV markets. Further, Intent’s terrific team and operating platform open up new opportunities for global expansion of our powerful U.S. brands, as well as development of Intent’s market-leading Gaming, Music and Computer/Mobile Retailing brands into the U.S.”

Intent will operate in parallel to NewBay’s existing business. Stuart Dinsey, Intent’s Founder and Managing Director, will continue his role under the new ownership and will help manage NewBay’s European efforts, operating from Intent’s offices in Hertfordshire and London.

“Intent has constantly expanded, becoming one of Europe’s biggest specialists in business media for entertainment markets,” says Dinsey. “Our entrepreneurial spirit and on-going ambitions fit perfectly with NewBay. Together, we look forward to exploring further growth opportunities.”

The transaction between NewBay, which was formed in 2006 by the sale of United Business Media’s CMP Entertainment Media division, and Intent, which purchased several brands from United Business Media last year, returns several sister publications back under one roof.

These include Pro Sound News and Pro Sound News Europe, Systems Contractor News and Installation, and TV Technology (which now incorporates TV Broadcast) and TVB Europe. The combined portfolio will offer readers, advertisers and partners unparalleled depth, breadth and reach into these vibrant, dynamic and international markets.

“I have been impressed with every aspect of Intent’s business — I am excited to include these dynamic brands and talented team as part of the NewBay family,” adds Palm. “Together with Intent, our ability to serve our readers, advertisers and partners is immediately expanded and enhanced.”

This marks the sixth major acquisition of brands by NewBay in as many years, adding select assets from United Business Media’s CMP Entertainment Media division in September 2006, from IMAS in July 2007, from Reed Business Information-US in December 2009, from Penton in February 2011, and from Future PLC in January 2012. All of the previously acquired titles continue to thrive as part of the NewBay Media portfolio.

The Jordan, Edmiston Group, Inc. (JEGI), a leading independent investment bank, represented Intent in this transaction and acted as its exclusive financial advisor.
