NewBay Media Acquires AV-IQ From InfoComm International

NEW YORK, NY (August 1, 2014) — NewBay Media, publisher of leading commercial AV magazines such as Systems Contractor News, Sound & Video Contractor, AV Technology, Digital Signage, Tech & Learning, Mix and Pro Sound News, as well as the Official InfoComm Show Daily and Show Guide, has announced the acquisition of AV-IQ, the AV industry’s Equipment, Providers Directory & Industry Resource Center, from InfoComm International.

AV-IQ is a comprehensive online resource for the pro-AV industry that includes equipment database, case studies, local service directories, product comparison tools, and much more. It features My-iQ, a personalized, cloud-based industry information resource that allows users to select sources, choose their own content, decide when to receive alerts, manage their own project lists, and search current and historical data by brand, product type, or date.

“We are excited to have this unique, valued resource join our industry-leading AV and IT focused portfolio of brands and services,” says Steve Palm, CEO, NewBay Media. “The addition of AV-IQ immediately strengthens our ability to serve the commercial AV market, and expands NewBay’s data, analytics and lead generation capabilities.”

“InfoComm has proudly owned AV-IQ for 14 years and has overseen its development from a simple online catalog to the robust, comprehensive resource it is today,” says David Labuskes, CTS, RCDD, Executive Director and CEO, InfoComm International. “I was initially surprised, albeit flattered, when NewBay approached InfoComm about purchasing this asset. However, as the InfoComm leadership team evaluated the offer, we came to realize that a successful private enterprise, like NewBay, would be better situated to leverage this data solution than a non-profit association ever could.”

The talented AV-IQ team has joined NewBay and will continue to be based out of its Minneapolis, MN offices. Management of AV-IQ will be handled by Adam Goldstein, EVP/Group Publisher, NewBay Media AV/Pro Audio, and Robert Ames, VP/Corporate Director of Digital Media.

“I look forward to working with the AV-IQ team to continue to build out this tremendous industry resource,” adds Goldstein. “It’s an exciting time for the commercial AV industry and my colleagues, both old and new, are excited about our expanding capabilities within this dynamic marketplace.”

For more information on AV-IQ’s research and lead generation capabilities, contact Adam Goldstein at 212-378-0465 or agoldstein@nbmedia.com.

THE CONTENT SHOW — New for 2014

ADVANCED ADVERTISING
Advanced Advertising tackles the latest developments in the continual quest to direct and tailor messages to the viewers that television advertisers want to reach on live TV and in shows that are accessed on-demand. Techniques for using knowledge of viewer behavior to reach specific audience segments are making it easier for companies to reach those consumers more efficiently, and at lower cost.

BUSINESS OF MULTIPLATFORM TV
The introduction of personal, mobile smart devices has brought television beyond the living room and into the hands of millions who prefer their TV “to go.” The Business of Multiplatform TV addresses this new direction for the business of all things multiplatform. Whether you use terms like “second screen” or “TV everywhere” or “OTT,” the fact is that the TV viewing experience is now very different because of the mass accessibility to new technologies, especially personal “smart” viewing devices.

NEXT TV SUMMIT
The Next TV Summit is a high-level B2B conference, exhibition and networking opportunity that focuses on broadcasting, content, digital media and OTT. The Next TV Summit brings together entertainment, advertising, broadcasting and digital technology executives to share ideas, develop new business opportunities and better monetize streaming video on today’s new content platforms and devices.

Steve Smith Changes Role at TWICE

NEW YORK, NY (June 25, 2014) — Steve Smith, Editor-in-Chief of TWICE, has announced his plans to transition from his role as Editor-In-Chief to Editor-At-Large, effective July 31st, 2014. In his new role, Smith will continue to cover the CE industry with a monthly column and blog. Additionally he will maintain an important link to CEA and the TWICE CES Daily during 2015 International CES.

Smith has led TWICE for 21 years and during that time his contributions to the brand and the CE industry are tremendous. He has presided over the brand through the many changes and innovations the market has presented. From the early days of video games and home computers and VCRs, to CE’s conversion from analog to digital formats with the introduction of CD, DVD, satellite TV and radio, to the game-changing launch of HDTV, and now the next-generation 4K/Ultra HD TV, Smith has lent his perspective to these and many other burgeoning products and product categories. He looks forward to commenting on the all the innovations that are reaching the market today including 3D technology and wearable technology.

“The highlight of my career has been the 21 years I have spent at TWICE,” says Smith. “As I take on a different role here, my thanks go to the industry’s suppliers, retailers, buying groups, and distributors — not to mention the Consumer Electronics Association — who support our efforts and share their expertise and insights with TWICE. And my thanks to all current and former members of our editorial staff, including freelancers, who have helped create and maintain TWICE as a top-notch and reliable source of news and information for one of the most important industries of our time.”

During his tenure, TWICE has won awards for its coverage of the development of high definition television from the Academy of Digital Television Pioneers, as well as numerous internal editorial awards from the publication’s various owners. He is a sought after speaker and moderator at a variety of industry events over the years.

Smith has also been a long time friend and mentor to many in the industry. He has been a key figure in bringing together the many disparate buying groups and distributors all under one tent where competition takes a back seat to sharing of information and best practices during the many TWICE roundtable and events he has hosted and attended.

And through it all he has given so much of his time and energy to various causes, including his relationship with the Anti-Defamation League. This organization bestowed one of its highest achievements on Smith in 2004 by recognizing his contributions and awarding its Torch of Liberty award to him. He follows in the footsteps of many industry greats receiving this prestigious honor.

As well as being a member of the Leadership Panel for the Samsung Solve For Tomorrow program, he is a longtime judge on the Consumer Electronics Association’s CE Hall of Fame committee. He has also been interviewed and quoted by various media outlets to discuss key issues facing the consumer electronics industry many times during his career.

Prior to his tenure with TWICE, Smith held editorial leadership positions at Toy & Hobby World and Home Furnishings News.

In addition to his TWICE contributions, Smith plans on enjoying this next chapter in his life writing books and traveling with his wife of 34 years, Marion.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I want to congratulate Steve on a hugely successful tenure as TWICE‘s Editor-in-Chief,” says Ed Hecht, VP/Publisher, TWICE. “We look forward with excitement as he becomes TWICE‘s Editor-at-Large, a role that is tailor-made for someone with Steve’s unique perspective and experience.”

TWICE will announce new editorial management shortly.

NYC Television Week Returns November 11-13, 2014

NEW YORK, NY (May 19, 2014) — The second annual NYC Television Week — and the television industry — will take over Manhattan from November 11-13, 2014. Featuring conferences at the Affinia Manhattan — directly across from Penn Station — and nearby venues, the industry gathers at NYC Television Week to network, collaborate, and celebrate in the media capital of the world. NYC Television Week is presented by Broadcasting & Cable, Multichannel News, and Next TV.

“Last year’s inaugural NYC Television Week proved that it is something that the industry wants and will support,” states Steve Palm, CEO, NewBay Media. “This year we are growing the week to offer even more diverse content and more experiential opportunities — all from the most recognized thought-leaders in the business.”

New for 2014 is a deeper dive into content issues and solutions with the addition of The Content Show at the Affinia on November 12-13. The Content Show will have a dedicated conference that will cover programming for scripted, live, news, sports, documentary, and reality shows, as well as branded content. Beyond the sessions, The Content Show will also feature a networking lounge and a series of demo rooms where production companies can pitch their content to buyers and programmers.

This year’s NYC Television Week also features several key conferences from Broadcasting & Cable, Multichannel News and Next TV’s Leadership Series, including Advanced Advertising and Business of TV in a Multiplatform World. These are joined by the popular Next TV Summit, now including the inaugural Next TV Awards.

“We have built upon last year’s foundations by incorporating industry favorites with new current categories that demand attention,” says Louis Hillelson, VP/Publishing Director, Broadcasting & Cable, Multichannel News, and Next TV. “Nothing covers the full breadth of the industry like NYC Television Week does. And, with this year’s additions, we are delving even deeper into all things television.”

The conferences taking place that week featured 87 industry leaders as keynotes and presenters, including Mike White, President, Chairman and CEO, DIRECTV; David J. Stern, Commissioner, National Basketball Association; Stephanie McMahon, Executive Vice President, Creative, WWE; and Deb Roy, Chief Media Scientist, Twitter, to name a few.

2014 Leaders of the Year Announced by Tech & Learning Magazine

SAN BRUNO, CA (May 13, 2014) – Tech & Learning magazine named four educators as winners in its 27th annual Leader of the Year program. These visionaries exemplified extraordinary education technology leadership, often working within budgetary restrictions and limited resources. Among the winners are two superintendents, a director of innovation and digital learning, and a computer instructor. All four exemplified outstanding leadership that did more than just put tools into the hands of teachers and students, but shifted the school culture so all stakeholders embraced the meaningful use of technology in their schools.

“This year’s slate of candidates was the most impressive I can remember,” said Kevin Hogan, editorial director of Tech & Learning Media Group. “When it came down to selecting the ultimate winners, we found these these educators all shared common traits in leadership, whether it was in the classroom or in front of the school board. They have an ability to both inspire their communities and take action to ensure their visions become reality.”

Thanks to a sponsorship from Aruba Networks, all four winners will receive a trip to ISTE 2014 in Atlanta, where they will be honored at a gala celebration.

“To ensure students receive the best possible education and remain competitive in today’s world, they need the benefits from a blend of traditional education with new technologies,” said Kezia Gollapudi, product marketing for Aruba Networks. “The winners of the 27th annual Tech & Learning magazine Leader of Year program are progressive innovators that demonstrated creative ways to implement technology into daily curriculum. The results are models for other school districts to help educators advance learning for years to come.”

Please join us in congratulating the winners of the 2014 Tech & Learning Leader of the Year Program:

Debra Jackson, Superintendent, Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery (NY) Central School District: As superintendent of Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery Central School District for the last six years, Jackson has made sure that her teachers, administrators, families, and students had the support to come up with new ideas and try them out. “For me, the whole idea of moving forward is allowing people to take risks, be creative, and then make decisions about what works,” she says. “I like to bring in all voices, including students. In the past three years we’ve seen a huge shift, and it’s incredibly exciting. This award validates the creative efforts of our educators. They took a risk by shifting from the conventional to the visionary.”

Lisa Gonzales, Superintendent, Portola Valley (CA) School District: As superintendent of Portola Valley School District since August 2013, Gonzales has already introduced social media to promote school programs and staff, developed a district app to improve home-school communication, and models how to use technology by creating her own eblasts on everything from board meeting highlights to STEM program updates. “I share this award this with my district’s staff, my fellow tech leaders in ACSA and TICAL, and school leaders who model, lead, and advocate for technology as a tool for learning, communicating and operating. From infrastructure to funding, teaching to learning, there is much work to do to effectively and purposefully utilize tech to support students, staff, and parents.”

Carl Hooker, Director of Innovation and Digital Learning, Eanes (TX) Independent School District (ISD): In the last six months, Carl Hooker delivered the keynote presentation for Tech & Learning‘s Atlanta Tech Forum, organized a youth film festival, wrote several blogs about the digital zombification of our society, planned the third iPadpalooza, helped overturn a state decision to ban tablets from state testing, and taught an iTunesU course called “Digital Parenting 101” with community parents. And did we mention he did all of this while working his “day job” as director of innovation and digital learning at Eanes ISD? “I’ve been a fan for many years of the work Tech & Learning does with their magazine and Tech Forum events throughout the country. As a fan, it’s an honor to be recognized as one of this year’s Leaders of the Year. I take this honor as extra motivation to continue to strive for improvements for all learners, not only in my district, but across the country.”

Txe Kolstad, Computer Instructor, Templeton Elementary School, Templeton, CA: Although she’s only been on the job for only one year, Txe Kolstad took Templeton’s computer program from a basic room setup to one in which every student has a meaningful and purposeful experience. She knows all 585 of her PreK, kindergarten, 1st-, and 2nd-grade students by name and creates a differentiated technology experience for each child that’s based on their interests, skill level, and personality. “More than anything, it’s the students who deserve this award. They’re the ones who rose to the occasion and learned many things that adults don’t know or things adults think are too hard for early elementary students to learn. I hope it will encourage other districts and schools to introduce students to computer skills at an earlier age.”
