Mix Presents Groundbreaking “Sound For Film” Event On Immersive Sound

NEW YORK, NY (August 5, 2014) — Mix, in conjunction with host sponsor Sony Pictures Studios, is launching a special one-day event for the motion picture sound industry, “Sound for Film: Immersive Sound—From Production to Playback,” to be held September 6, 2014, on the Sony Pictures Entertainment studio lot in Culver City, Calif. Mix is owned by NewBay Media, the world’s largest publisher of AV/Pro Audio resources and news.

The event, presented in conjunction with Event Partners the Motion Picture Sound Editor’s Guild (MPSE) and the Cinema Audio Society (CAS), encompasses a full day of programming, including panels on the technology, business, and creative aspects of immersive sound; technology workshops sponsored by leading manufacturers in state-of-the-art theaters; a series of film reel playback demonstrations in Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D, and DTS MDA interop file format; and an end-of-day, sneak-preview exclusive screening of an upcoming Sony Pictures film, mixed for Atmos release and played back in the William Holden Theatre.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Sony Post Production Services, one of the world’s leading facilities, for this event,” says Mix editor Tom Kenny. “There have been quite a few major technology advances in editing and mixing since the early 1990s, when digital took hold and 5.1 discrete playback became the norm. But the recent leap forward in surround sound is something new and big — for the creatives, for the technology companies, and for the audience. Immersive sound is changing the movie-going experience, and it’s just getting started. There has been a great deal of emphasis placed on 3D visuals in theaters. Now it’s sound’s turn.”

“Sony Pictures Post Production Services is proud to be a part of this incredible event with Mix. It will bring together professionals from many disciplines to discuss the importance of sound, immersive sound formats, new technologies and workflows that support the creation of soundtracks that are vital to the work of filmmakers and the enjoyment of audiences,” says Tom McCarthy, Executive Vice President, Sony Pictures Post Production Services. “Sound has always been an integral part of the storytelling process in film. Sound is to acting and dialogue what a picture frame is to a great work of art.

“The development of new, immersive sound formats has created additional opportunities for filmmakers and sound professionals to add layers to their storytelling, resulting in what might be called a ‘virtual reality audio experience.’ Today, soundtracks envelop their audiences in sound, music, and atmospheres, making them feel as though they are actually a part of the movie. New sound technologies are enhancing the movie-going experience for people around the globe,” adds McCarthy.

“We are privileged to be partnering with such well-respected industry leaders as Sony Pictures Studios, the MPSE and the CAS, who have all been instrumental in helping us to spotlight this innovative and unprecedented event,” adds Charlie Weiss, Group Publisher of Mix and NewBay’s AV/Pro Audio franchise. “By working together, we are bringing the highest level of creative and technical minds in sound for film, from all major studios and technology providers.”

Sponsors at press time include Auro Technologies, Yamaha, DTS, Dolby, Meyer Sound, GC Pro, and Harrison Consoles. Panelists, keynote speaker and final program information will be announced in early August.

AV-IQ is a comprehensive online resource for the pro-AV industry that includes equipment database, case studies, local service directories, product comparison tools, and much more. “We are excited to have this unique, valued resource join our industry-leading AV and IT focused portfolio of brands and services,” says Steve Palm, CEO, NewBay Media. “The addition of AV-IQ immediately strengthens our ability to serve the commercial AV market, and expands NewBay’s data, analytics and lead generation capabilities.”

“InfoComm has proudly owned AV-IQ for 14 years and has overseen its development from a simple online catalog to the robust, comprehensive resource it is today,” says David Labuskes, CTS, RCDD, Executive Director and CEO, InfoComm International. “I was initially surprised, albeit flattered, when NewBay approached InfoComm about purchasing this asset. However, as the InfoComm leadership team evaluated the offer, we came to realize that a successful private enterprise, like NewBay, would be better situated to leverage this data solution than a non-profit association ever could.”

Registration Opens for 2014 NYC Television Week

NEW YORK, NY (July 23, 2014) — NYC Television Week, presented by Broadcasting & Cable, Multichannel News, and Next TV, has announced that registration for the 2014 event, taking place at the Affinia Manhattan on November 12-13, is now open. Interested industry professionals can learn more and register by visiting http://nyctelevisionweek.com/register.

As it did in the inaugural event last year, the 2014 NYC Television Week will uniquely cover the breadth of today’s dynamic TV industry with conferences, award presentations, networking events and seminars that engage the diversity of talent and roles that make today’s TV business one of the world’s most exciting industries.

This year’s event is made up of four conferences — three of them key conferences from Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel News’ Leadership Series — and one brand new addition that covers today’s most prevalent issues. They are as follows:

THE CONTENT SHOW — New for 2014
The Content Show is a two-day dedicated conference and marketplace that will cover all aspects of programming, development and distribution for scripted, live, news, sports, documentary, and nonfiction entertainment, as well as branded content. ADVANCED ADVERTISING
Advanced Advertising tackles the latest developments in the continual quest to direct and tailor messages to the viewers that television advertisers want to reach on live TV and in shows that are accessed on-demand. Techniques for using knowledge of viewer behavior to reach specific audience segments are making it easier for companies to reach those consumers more efficiently, and at lower cost.

BUSINESS OF MULTIPLATFORM TV
The introduction of personal, mobile smart devices has brought television beyond the living room and into the hands of millions who prefer their TV “to go.” The Business of Multiplatform TV addresses this new direction for the business of all things multiplatform. Whether you use terms like “second screen” or “TV everywhere” or “OTT,” the fact is that the TV viewing experience is now very different because of the mass accessibility to new technologies, especially personal “smart” viewing devices.

NEXT TV SUMMIT
The Next TV Summit is a high-level B2B conference, exhibition and networking opportunity that focuses on broadcasting, content, digital media and OTT. The Next TV Summit brings together entertainment, advertising, broadcasting and digital technology executives to share ideas, develop new business opportunities and better monetize streaming video on today’s new content platforms and devices.

New for 2014 is the Next TV Awards, which will honor those people, companies, and products that are paving the way for new business opportunities on the latest content platforms and devices.

How to Get Your Content to Do the Selling

By: Kristin Kovacich –

We create content to establish our brands as experts and thought leaders by providing answers to industry related questions and addressing topics that the people who are interested in your product care about. This establishes trust and keeps your brand top of mind when your potential customers think about your industry. This is a very important aspect of content creation but what about the bottom line? How do we get our content to move our customer along the purchase process and ultimately help make a sale?

Doug Kessler, Creative Director & Co-founder of B2B marketing agency Velocity, has put together a SlideShare presentation that lays out the unique content creation considerations for making the sale.

Kessler posits that the most important characteristic of successful content at the buying stage is that it convinces the customer that there has been a real and significant change in the world. The content must exemplify this change through data, 3rd party analysis and a reason for the change; and it also must show the change is relevant and inevitable to the customer and if they are not ready for it they will fall behind their competitors.

Below are the 6 characteristics Kessler lays out for creating content that sells change:

1. It’s direct and assertive. There’s no pussy-footing when it comes to content that sells.

2. It starts from what the prospect already knows. Don’t try to convince them the sky is green at the offset. You want to convince them change is nigh but you don’t want them to be completely disoriented.

3. It’s linear. Don’t take them all over the place when laying out your argument. Keep it focused and keep it moving.

4. It’s data-driven. Facts go a long way toward building credibility but don’t rely too heavily on them. Let your data do the supporting not the heavy lifting.

5. It asks for the order. Convincing the prospect of a coming change that’s going to rock their world is the hardest part but don’t forget the reason why you’re there.

6. It makes now seem like the ideal time to act. Because tomorrow will be too late and catching up will be costly.

It’s important to remember that not all content is created equally and knowing what we want out of it and how to get it helps ensure it is effective.\

Steve Smith Changes Role at TWICE

NEW YORK, NY (June 25, 2014) — Steve Smith, Editor-in-Chief of TWICE, has announced his plans to transition from his role as Editor-In-Chief to Editor-At-Large, effective July 31st, 2014. In his new role, Smith will continue to cover the CE industry with a monthly column and blog. Additionally he will maintain an important link to CEA and the TWICE CES Daily during 2015 International CES.

Smith has led TWICE for 21 years and during that time his contributions to the brand and the CE industry are tremendous. He has presided over the brand through the many changes and innovations the market has presented. From the early days of video games and home computers and VCRs, to CE’s conversion from analog to digital formats with the introduction of CD, DVD, satellite TV and radio, to the game-changing launch of HDTV, and now the next-generation 4K/Ultra HD TV, Smith has lent his perspective to these and many other burgeoning products and product categories. He looks forward to commenting on the all the innovations that are reaching the market today including 3D technology and wearable technology.

“The highlight of my career has been the 21 years I have spent at TWICE,” says Smith. “As I take on a different role here, my thanks go to the industry’s suppliers, retailers, buying groups, and distributors — not to mention the Consumer Electronics Association — who support our efforts and share their expertise and insights with TWICE. And my thanks to all current and former members of our editorial staff, including freelancers, who have helped create and maintain TWICE as a top-notch and reliable source of news and information for one of the most important industries of our time.”

During his tenure, TWICE has won awards for its coverage of the development of high definition television from the Academy of Digital Television Pioneers, as well as numerous internal editorial awards from the publication’s various owners. He is a sought after speaker and moderator at a variety of industry events over the years.

Smith has also been a long time friend and mentor to many in the industry. He has been a key figure in bringing together the many disparate buying groups and distributors all under one tent where competition takes a back seat to sharing of information and best practices during the many TWICE roundtable and events he has hosted and attended.

And through it all he has given so much of his time and energy to various causes, including his relationship with the Anti-Defamation League. This organization bestowed one of its highest achievements on Smith in 2004 by recognizing his contributions and awarding its Torch of Liberty award to him. He follows in the footsteps of many industry greats receiving this prestigious honor.

As well as being a member of the Leadership Panel for the Samsung Solve For Tomorrow program, he is a longtime judge on the Consumer Electronics Association’s CE Hall of Fame committee. He has also been interviewed and quoted by various media outlets to discuss key issues facing the consumer electronics industry many times during his career.

Prior to his tenure with TWICE, Smith held editorial leadership positions at Toy & Hobby World and Home Furnishings News.

In addition to his TWICE contributions, Smith plans on enjoying this next chapter in his life writing books and traveling with his wife of 34 years, Marion.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I want to congratulate Steve on a hugely successful tenure as TWICE‘s Editor-in-Chief,” says Ed Hecht, VP/Publisher, TWICE. “We look forward with excitement as he becomes TWICE‘s Editor-at-Large, a role that is tailor-made for someone with Steve’s unique perspective and experience.”

TWICE will announce new editorial management shortly.
