MCV Awards 2012: The winners in full

There were no prizes for the format holders. Instead, the top three publishers all claimed multiple prizes while ambitious smaller firms grabbed many others.

Activision took home four awards: two for the best-selling Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure (Digital Retail Innovation and New Game Brand) plus the Marketing Team prize, and the night’s most coveted, the Grand Prix.

It was Activision’s first win of the top prize, which recognised key achievements including the introduction of new brand Skylanders at the most difficult point in the console cycle, plus continued success for Call of Duty both in boxed products and DLC sales.

But EA, Ubisoft and Bethesda did not go home empty-handed.

EA’s Battlefield 3 took the Game Campaign award and the firm overall won the Games Publisher prize.

Wins for Ubisoft were the PR Team prize – voted for by a panel of 100 games journalists – plus the Sales Team award.

Bethesda, meanwhile, claimed the Trade Marketing Team and Digital Distribution Team prizes.

Elsewhere, Deep Silver won for its attention-grabbing Dead Island social media debut, while 505’s energetic Zumba Fitness took the Sales Triumph prize.

In retail, John Lewis’ Oxford Street Nintendo shop beat established specialists to Star Store, while Mainstream Retailer went to Amazon UK. ShopTo bested bigger rivals to be named Specialist Retailer, and Games Centre won Independent Retailer. CentreSoft was also named the best High Street Distribution Team.

Rosemary Buahin won this year’s Special Recognition prize. The trade marketing exec has held roles at Sony, WBIE, Eidos, Novalogic and Acclaim, and is hugely respected for her work with retail.

MCVuk.com breaks traffic records

MCV Online posted record traffic for March 2012 as the site hit core consumers as well as trade.

MCVuk.com attracted a record-breaking 506k unique users during the month, with pageviews also hitting a record-breaking 2m for the period, according to Google Analytics data.

In short, MCVuk.com affirmed itself as the must-go website for both industry professionals and pro-gamers, both in the UK and across the world, during what was a momentous month.

The numbers are not only records for MCVuk.com, but also for owner Intent Media, which continues to expand its online portfolio of publications.

March saw the appointment of MCV’s first North American correspondent, Erik Johnson, as well as the launch of brand new regional portal MCV Nordic, which joins the successful MCV Pacific.

Publisher Stuart Dinsey said: “With unrivalled contacts at the heart of the games industry and an international reach that puts our competitors to shame, the site continues to provide a complete news resource for everyone with an interest in the rapidly changing global games market.”

As well as its market-leading website, MCV magazine brings you inside information and analysis on all of the biggest issues defining the modern games industry.

MCV Nordic’s editor is Mats Nylund, supported by a team of writers in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.

The sales and marketing exec is Christer Engstrom.

Intent Media’s managing director Stuart Dinsey said: “We have put together a team of dedicated local writers and are delighted with response so far from the Nordic region.

“MCV Nordic follows the success of MCV Pacific and the appiontment of a US editor for the main MCV site. Further international launches are on the way. It’s an exciting time for the global MCV brand.”

To find out how MCV Nordic can support your business year-round across its online, email and social channels, contact Christer Engstrom here.

MCV heads into Nordic territories

Covering Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland, MCV Nordic will arrive in mid-March with local editors and in partnership with local trade organisations. It will cover all aspects of the industry, from publishing, retail and distribution to games development, iOS, casual, browser games and recruitment.

Like MCV UK, it is also expected that the site will attract significant interest from core gamers.

MCV Nordic will be run by Christer Engstrom in Stockholm. He will oversee both editorial and commercial development. Engstrom launched the first video games TV channel in Sweden and hosts the local annual trade awards and two TV shows about games.

The launch of MCV Nordic follows the success of MCV Pacific, which arrived for the Australian and New Zealand region in October.

“Exciting things are happening in the Nordic region,” said Intent Media managing director Stuart Dinsey. “It’s a growing market, brimful with potential and talent. Christer is hugely respected and, as with MCV Pacific, we expect to make an instant impact.”

Engstrom added: “Many of the professionals in the Nordic games industry already follow MCV from the UK so we are excited to finally localise the site with news and updates closer to home.”

NewBay Media Acquires Guitar World, Revolver, And Guitar Aficionado From Future Plc

NEW YORK, NY (January 13, 2012) — NewBay Media LLC
(“NewBay”) announced today that it has acquired the US Music Division,
including Guitar World, Revolver, and Guitar Aficionado, from Future US, Inc, the San Francisco-based
subsidiary of Future plc.

The acquisition establishes NewBay Media as the world’s leading
publisher of guitar magazines, digital media, and events. Reaching over 5
million music and audio professionals and enthusiasts every month, NewBay’s
expanded network now offers unsurpassed reach and effectiveness for its
advertisers and partners.

The acquired, award-winning titles will join NewBay’s large
portfolio of Music and Professional Audio brands, including Guitar Player, Bass Player, Keyboard, Electronic Musician, Mix, Pro Audio Review,

Guitar World is the largest guitar magazine in the world.
It features artist interviews, gear reviews, and guitar news, as well as lessons
and transcriptions in all popular genres. Revolver
is the premiere heavy metal rock magazine with in-depth coverage of
trend-setting artists, bands, and the heavy metal lifestyle.
Guitar
Aficionado,

guitar as the common passion point. The annual Golden Gods Awards, Rock &
Roll Roast, and a growing portfolio of Guitar
Aficionado
events will now be produced by NewBay.

“These titles, and the talented team behind them, have set a
high standard for guitar enthusiast publishers around the world, and we are
thrilled to welcome them into the NewBay family,” states Steve Palm, CEO,
NewBay Media. “This acquisition furthers our goal to offer our readers and
advertisers unparalleled depth and breadth within the music and pro audio
communities.”

Mark Wood, CEO of Future

Guitar World, Revolver, and Guitar Aficionado are outstanding
magazines that have made a tremendous contribution to Future’s US business,
which we are now refocusing. NewBay Media, with its strong market
position and passion for music, is now the perfect home for
these superb brands. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the
brilliant teams who will be leaving us and wish them every success at
NewBay.”

percent overlap in circulation and distinctly independent editorial missions,
we intend to continue to publish each of our existing and acquired magazines.”

This marks the fifth major acquisition of brands by NewBay
in as many years, adding select assets from United Business Media’s CMP
Entertainment Media division in September 2006, from IMAS in July 2007, from
Reed Business Information-US in December 2009, and, from Penton in February
2011. All of the previously acquired titles continue to thrive as part of the
NewBay Media portfolio.
