Installation launches new Showcase conference event

Installation is proud to present a new concept in case study-led conferences for the installed AV market. Installation Showcase makes its debut on 5 November 2013 at BAFTA on London’s Piccadilly.

Installation Showcase is a new kind of conference event for the AV industry. It is based around case study presentations in a particular market sector, which is different every time the event takes place. After all the presentations – given by integrators, consultants or clients – are completed, the audience members have their say by voting for the project that they feel scores highest on innovation, value for money and wow factor. The winning projects receive awards.

The first Installation Showcase is devoted to entertainment venues – such as stadia, arenas, theatres, auditoria, concert halls and cinemas. Questions likely to be addressed include:

• How do you ensure that venues are suitably equipped for multi-purpose use?
• How are the audio and video networking decisions arrived at?
• How is futureproofing achieved?

In addition to the case studies, panel discussions will provide an opportunity to discuss and debate some of the wider issues affecting AV integration projects.

New face for MI Pro

MI Pro has a new member of its editorial team, with former Audio Pro International editor Daniel Gumble joining.

Previously editor of Mobile Entertainment, Gumble replaces Jory Mackay who, after a nine-month stint as staff writer is moving to Intent Media’s London office as deputy editor on sister mag, Audio Media.

MI Pro managing editor, Ronnie Dungan, commented: “Whilst I’m sorry to lose Jory, who did a fantastic job in his short stint on the mag, in Dan I now have a deputy editor who has the skills and experience to make it a seamless transition and continue to improve the product both in print and online.”

PCR restructures editorial team

PCR has hired two new senior members of staff.

Andrew Wooden (right) takes on the role of managing editor, while Dominic Sacco (left) has joined as editor.

Wooden will lead PCR’s strategy and develop new business opportunities for the publication, while Sacco will oversee editorial content and direction of the print title and website.

Wooden returns to PCR after spending a year and a half as news editor at Future Publishing’s technology title T3 and T3.com. Prior to that, he worked at Intent Media for six years.

Sacco moves across from Intent Media’s sister publications ToyNews and Licensing.biz, where he held the position of deputy editor. He formerly worked at Intent’s gaming publication MCV after a two-year stint at Auto Trader.

Laura Barnes remains on PCR as staff writer, with Intent Media currently recruiting a fourth member of the editorial team.

Former PCR editor Helen French takes on the role of Digital Producer for Intent Media, where she will be working on the publisher’s digital strategy. 

The changes on the team come as executive sales manager Carly Bailey heads off on maternity leave, with Rob Baker taking on the role of acting sales manager and Carole Eagles joining as associate sales manager.

PCR Boot Camp 2013: Watch the video highlights

More than 250 technology retailers and resellers from across the UK visited this year’s PCR Boot Camp event on Wednesday May 29th.

Held at The Brewery, London, PCR Boot Camp was a one-day conference and expo about networking, seeing new products and improving business.

The speakers at the morning conference at The Brewery, London – including ex-BRC boss Stephen Robertson and SEO expert John Straw – showed there are still plenty of opportunities in the channel for savvy dealers. Meanwhile vendors from Microsoft to Philips and Prestigio showcased the new products that could be the key to industry’s future during the exhibition in the afternoon.

The day was rounded off by an After-Show Drinks Reception sponsored by Micro-P. where retailers could let their hair down, have a drink, and pick up VIP goody bags that included a free Jabra Bluetooth Solemate speaker worth £150.

PCR’s publisher Lisa Carter commented: “Seeing the return of last year’s attendees and lots of new faces was hugely satisfying. We hope they took home lots of information and practical advice, and most of all just had a really good day for doing business with everyone in the channel. MIRC 2013: MI dealers flock to new venue

It was standing room only during the morning conference as the full room of dealers listened to presentations by retail experts from varying backgrounds.

Musicroom operations manager, Andrew Nixon, was in attendance with several other colleagues who all agreed that both the conference and the expo were improvements on past years.

“I thought the speakers were a nice mix of both external and industry,” commented Andrew. “Colin Rees had a lot of really useful tips for this industry. You wouldn’t think of it necessarily but the bike and MI industries are so similar.”

“There are parallels in getting families involved as well. Just like every kid learns to ride a bicycle, every child tries to learn an instrument.”

Musicroom purchasing director Kate Herd added: “The very first MIRC conference I went to was very much about burying heads in the sand, panicing and how Amazon was the devil, but this year’s was more about ideas and where the industry’s going.”

After the morning conference, the afternoon expo featured 26 manufacturers and distributors representing nearly 150 brands.

The overwhelming consensus was that the new venue in Whittlebury Hall, Northamptonshire, gave dealers a more engaging experience and the chance to get more facetime with exisiting and potentially new manufacturers and distributors.

“Last year people would walk around quickly and then go, but this year there’s a lot more engagement,” said Alan Barclay from Absolute Music. “It’s well organized and I’m struggling to get around to see everyone! I think it’s much better this way. London versus Whittlebury Hall – this is definitely a better choice.”

London Games Conference 2013: Theme, date and venue confirmed

Retailers & resellers flock to PCR Boot Camp

Yesterday 250 technology retailers and resellers from across the UK visited PCR Boot Camp with the goal of learning, networking, seeing new products and improving business.

While there may be stories in the news about retail store closures and PC sales dipping, speakers at the morning conference at The Brewery, London showed there are still plenty of opportunities for savvy dealers. Meanwhile vendors during the exhibition showcased the new products that could be the key to industry’s future. 

After a welcome speech by Microsoft’s OEM distribution and reseller sales manager Nicola Young, Linkdex’s John Straw took the stage to explain how to get to the top of Google Search, boosting sales.

Digital expert Peter McCormack gave the audience vital insights into the online world during his talk titled ‘There is more to digital marketing than Facebook and Twitter’.

The first panel session of the day discussed the topic of engaging with customers before they enter the store and featured Craig Hume from Utopia, Susanne Dansey of Purple Cow, Derek Jones from Synaxon and Vaughan Shayler from CompTIA, while James Binns of Network N stood as chair.

GfK’s Nigel Catlow took to stage with a talk entitled ‘Connect with growth in tech durables’, in which he spoke about the growing popularity of smart devices – showing that while the desktop may no longer be a big seller, there are plenty of products to take its place.

The second panel session focused on maximising sales in-store. Chaired by Dave Stevinson, GNR, the panel comprised: Jat Mann, PC PAL; Angela English, Westcoast; Craig Phillipson from Shopworks; Stephen Mader, Kantar Retail.

Stephen Robertson rounded off the conference with a keynote speech focused on the retail state of the nation, in which he examined how consumer spending had changed over the years.

After the morning conference, the afternoon expo was packed with retailers and resellers keen to see the latest products from tablets to accessories, software to speakers. Break-out and training sessions also ran alongside the expo.

David Offer from Plantronics noted: “It’s been great this year, this is a good event for networking and it’s good to see what the resellers are doing. It’s been a really engaging day.”

Gareth Thomas, managing director for Otone said: “We’ve found the day really, really busy, we’ve had so many people visit the stand, which is great!”

Neil Crosby from JP Distribution commented: “It’s been a very busy day and well worth coming along to.”

Martin Kent from Hannspree noted: “We’ve been pleasantly surprised by the amount of people gravitating towards our stand today. It’s been really good and really positive.”

GMAs return with focus on talent and youth

And this year a new element will be added to the mix – the Games Media Academy.

The Games Media Awards will again reward every area of games media. The prestigious Games Writer of the Year accolade will return (see below). Also, this year a new award/competition is being added which aims to discover the games writers of tomorrow.

The Games Media Academy is open to anyone looking for a first foot on the ladder. This special prize will see the winner celebrated on the night, but importantly he/she will be offered paid commissions by the leading media outlets in the games industry worth £1,000. As well as providing invaluable experience, the winner will be mentored by some of the biggest names in games media – including last year’s Games Writer of the Year, IGN’s Keza MacDonald. Another change for this year, the awards (with the exception of the Games Writer of the Year and Games Media Academy accolades) will be judged by the games press only. No PRs will be invited on the judging panel.

GAMES WRITER OF THE YEAR

After its successful debut in 2012, the Games Writer of the Year Award is returning to reward excellence in games journalism.

All games journalists – specialist, non-specialist, print and online – can enter this category. Journalists simply need to submit a piece of writing published since October 18th last year.

Once again, the nominations will be judged – totally anonymously – by award-winning journalist and Guardian columnist Tim Lott.

GAMES MEDIA ACADEMY

An exciting new award for this year, the Games Media Academy is supported by Future, IGN, Network-N and, of course, Intent Media.

This category is open to anyone who is currently NOT paid as a member of the games press. The award will be promoted to consumers via the games press, the media press and through media courses at universities.

Submissions should be up to 400 words long and can be a games preview, review, interview, opinion or analytical feature. The only proviso is that the piece is about video games. Consumers can enter via the gmacademy@intentmedia.co.uk email address.

12 finalists will be chosen and announced at the beginning of August and their work will be showcased in a special supplement published with MCV.

The judging panel for this category will include:
