MCV Awards 2006: Winners

The MCV Industry Excellence Awards 2006 took place in front of 600 guests at The Brewery in London on April 6th.


Following on from its series of successes at the same event 12 months earlier, Nintendo won the most individual awards on the night – namely Best PR Team, New Games Brand (Nintendogs), Best Television Campaign (DS) and Marketing Team of the Year.

Another multiple winner was THQ, which capped a fantastic 12 months in the UK market by picking up Most Improved Company and also the much sought after Best Sales Team award.

The UK arm of Sony Computer Entertainment, meanwhile, won the most prestigious award of all, the Grand Prix. This was in recognition of its commercial success, innovation and business management. Over the course of 12 months, SCEE has overseen the launch of the PSP and quickly taken it past a million unit installed base, whilst pushing the PS2 up to historic UK sales of eight million. SCEE also introduced innovative new brands such as Buzz! and further developed the Singstar and EyeToy lines into ranges, with a number one via God of War to boot.

Amongst the retail awards, GameStation just pipped GAME to Entertainment Retailer of the Year, with accolades also going to fast-growing indie ePlay, HMV, Argos and EUK.

SCi was a popular winner of the Unsung Hero for keeping a famous games publishing name British with its acquisition last year of Eidos.

And Future’s Edge magazine finally threw off its ‘ever the bridesmaid, never the bride’ tag by comfortably winning Magazine Team of the year following many a fine edition.

“The transparent nature of the MCV Awards, where it is the industry itself that votes, means that every winner can feel very proud,” said MCV managing editor Lisa Foster. “We thank everyone for participating and also congratulate the Finalists. Develop Awards move to Brighton

The premier celebration of European games development talent will take place on Wednesday July 12th 2006 alongside the creative sector?s new conference and expo in Brighton, UK.

Now in their fourth year the Develop Industry Excellence Awards are designed to recognise and celebrate the talent, innovation and imagination that goes into the creation of games and game technologies.

Over 400 senior directors, investors and studio owners will mix with programmers, producers, artists and musicians on the night. The move to Brighton in 2006 will see the event grow, reflecting the vibrant nature of the European games development sector. The Awards will be presented in the midst of the Develop Conference & Expo, which is itself set to attract just under 1,000 delegates and exhibitors from all corners of the business.

There will be 18 awards up for grabs, running across dedicated categories such as Most Improved Studio, New Console IP, Best Use of Online, Publishing Hero and Development Team of the Year.

Last year?s big winners included Juice Games, which took the prize for best New European Studio; Traveller?s Tales scooped Best Use of a Licence, Most Improved Studio and Best Independent Developer, whilst Creative Assembly picked up the prestigious Grand Prix Award.

Intent Media targets music trade

MI Pro will boast a new size, improved editorial and design and have its
monthly UK and international circulation increased to over 8,500.

It will incorporate a dedicated Audio Pro section every month and will widen
its total readership. Importantly, the new MI Pro will be an inclusive
magazine – targeting readers at all levels of the business. Not just the

MI Pro will be a magazine for the entire MI community – distributed free to
all executives, buyers, distributors, shop owners and department managers
working within the MI and pro audio markets.

Intent Media acquires cycling brands

A major relaunch is due in the New Year, with the monthly print trade title Bicycle Business gaining significant investment, increased circulation and a complete re-design.
It will also change its name to BikeBiz – consolidating the monthly magazine, website and directory under one popular brand – with extended coverage of the children’s bike market.
As well as ToyNews, Intent Media already publishes market leading trade titles such as MCV: The Market for Home Computing & Video Games, Mobile Entertainment, PC Retail and Develop.

Carlton Reid, previously publisher and owner of the BikeBiz portfolio, has also signed a two year deal to remain as editor of all Intent’s cycling interests.

”We believe that the cycling business perfectly suits our specialism and this move will be welcomed by all toy manufacturers, distributors and licensees working in the children’s end of the market,” said publisher Stuart Dinsey.

MCV unveils new look

Games industry bible MCV will unveil its radical redesign next week, as publisher Intent Media prepares to usher in the next-generation of computers and games consoles with an equally formidable trade publication.

The redesign – to be unveiled at next week’s Games Market Europe trade event at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London on 31st August and 1st September – boasts a new size, a fresh design and an editorial style which provides in-depth analysis and reportage on the industry issues of the moment.

Now seven years old, MCV delivers genuine retail influence and ABC-audited high circulation, plus huge additional reach across media, development, investment and international sectors.

MCV will continue to set the news agenda as only a weekly publication can. All the key features, such as extensive product information and recommendation, exclusive ChartTrack sales data and a commitment to weekly circulation in excess of 10,000 will remain.

But the magazine will now boast an amended format offering authoritative editorial and insight, with the gravitas that only print journalism allows.

New columnists from all sectors of the business will debate the issues of the day, providing insight, opinion and analysis impossible to obtain elsewhere. MCV’s audience is also being expanded to target mainstream opinion-formers and journalists, giving the industry a credible trade voice like never before.

Videogames bible MCV has today revealed the finalists for this year’s prestigious Industry Excellence Awards.

Over 50 companies will be fighting it out for the industry’s 19 most celebrated awards, which together honour excellence throughout all levels of the business.

Electronic Arts leads the nominations table, short-listed seven times – although Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is close behind with a total of six. It’s been another good year for Activision/LucasArts and THQ, each of which could bag a potential four awards. Nintendo, Microsoft, VU Games, Take 2/Rockstar, SCi, GAME and Gamestation have each received three nominations apiece.

The winners will be unveiled at a lavish ceremony on April 7th 2005 at The Brewery, London. This year’s event – which will be attended by over 500 industry notables – has been expanded to acknowledge a wider range of industry achievements, with ‘Unsung Hero’ and ‘Most Improved Company’ added as categories.

New Trade Mag For Mobile Industry

The first business publication dedicated to the fast-growing mobile content sector is launched on Wednesday March 2nd 2005.

Mobile Entertainment will be published monthly, covering games, music, video, lifestyle and adult. It will be distributed to retailers, hardware manufacturers, network operators, IP owners, aggregators, developers, media and financial institutions, with a significant international reach from day one.

The mobile content sector has huge revenue-generating potential, with analysts projecting its worth at up to $50 billion by 2009. Meanwhile, the marketing community is just beginning to explore the promotional possibilities of mobile video, graphics and music.

Longtime Screen Digest contributor Tim Green is executive editor of Mobile Entertainment, whilst Stuart O’Brien moved from telecoms newsletter specialist the Informa Group to become editor.

Issue one will hit the desks of over 10,000 business readers, with an additional 27,000 one-off insertion through a selection of other business titles. The launch, which includes an advertising campaign in Media Week and Marketing, takes Intent Media’s magazine portfolio to five – the others being MCV: The Market for Home Computing & Video Games, Develop, PC Retail and ToyNews.
